AAOS endorses imaging guidelines for sarcoma surveillance: 3 things to know

Imaging

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons endorsed the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society's new appropriate use criteria to help physicians determine when to use imaging to monitor bone and soft tissue sarcoma survivors at risk of recurrence.

Here are three things to know:

1. The AUC is accessible through an online tool that rates the appropriateness of certain imaging services depending on patients' indications. The criteria is intended to help physicians minimize the amount of imaging required without jeopardizing surveillance accuracy.

2. The sarcoma surveillance AUC provides standardized best practices for metastatic disease identification and local recurrences given a variety of clinical factors.

3. The tool includes three-month, six-month and one-year intervals.
