Google-owned AI company DeepMind can now diagnose optical diseases by analyzing retinal scans with its algorithms, Sky News reports.
DeepMind received 1 million retinal scans from London, England-based Mooresfield Eye Hospital patients as part of a 2016 research study. Labels on the scans indicated whether they were of healthy or diseased optical systems, and the algorithm used these labels to train itself to diagnose patients using new scans.
Google submitted the study findings to a medical journal. If the study passes peer review and clinical trials, the algorithm could be used to diagnose patients.
