Surgeons at Northeast Georgia Medical Center have performed more than 5,000 robotic procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System at the hospital's Gainesville and Braselton campuses.
Here are four things to know:
1. NGMC's Gainesville and Braselton campuses feature four of the da Vinci robots.
2. NGMC's robotic surgical program includes more than 30 surgeons in a variety of specialties including bariatric, colorectal, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, thoracic, urology and general surgery.
3. In some cases, surgeons can use the robot to perform procedures through the patient's navel, resulting in almost no scarring.
4. NGMC also serves as a teaching facility for surgeons and staff who want to learn to use these robotic-assisted surgical techniques.
"Our patients benefit tremendously from robotic surgery as compared to traditional procedures which often require larger, open incisions," said Andrew Green, MD, a gynecologic oncologist with Northeast Georgia Physicians Group and medical director of the robotic surgical program at NGMC. "Common advantages include smaller incisions and less blood loss, which can also decrease the need for narcotic pain medicine. These benefits often translate to a shorter hospital stay and, in general, a quicker return to normal activities for our patients."
