Surgeons at Severance Hospital of the Yonsei University Health System in Seoul, South Korea, successfully performed spinal surgery using Medtronic's O-ARM O2 imaging system and Stealth Station, its accompanying navigation system, Korea Biomedical Review reports.
Here are three things to know:
1. Neurosurgeon Dr. Kim Keung-Nyun led the surgical team, who completed the posterior fixation surgery on a 60-year-old male patient suffering from radiating pain in the leg and spine.
2. Medtronic's O-ARM O2 records high-quality, 3-D images of the patient's body during surgery, which are automatically transmitted to the Stealth Station. The Stealth Station is a navigation system that gives the physician information about the patient's anatomy while reducing X-ray exposure. The systems are predominately used for spinal navigation.
3. There are about 1,200 units of Medtronic's O-ARM in operation around the world. There are four are in Korea, and Severance said that it is one of four local hospitals equipped with the system and the only one to use the second-generation version, which has twice the range of 3-D imaging and half the radiation compared with the first iteration.
