First standalone pediatric hospital acquires virtual reality visualization platform: 4 insights

University of California in San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is the first standalone pediatric hospital to acquire Surgical Theater's Precision Virtual Reality visualization platform.

Here are four things to know.

 

1. Virtual Reality allows surgeons to walk their patients through a 360 degree model of the patient's anatomy based on their CT and MRI scans. Surgeons can demonstrate customized digital treatment plans for patients, and the models can be used for intraoperative visualization and navigation during complex surgical procedures.

 

2. When wearing the VR headset, a physician and patient can "tour" the patient's anatomy, walking into the space between vascular structures and standing between arteries, tumors, aneurysms or other pathologies.

 

3. While the patient uses the headset, surgeons can explain and demonstrate the planned surgical path. VR is intended to help patients and their families better understand their conditions, improving patient engagement.

 

4. USCF Benioff Children's Hospital is a not-for-profit pediatric medical center specializing in cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders, organ transplants, orthopedics and care for critically ill newborns.
