Minnetonka, Minn.-based Zyga announced the enrollment of the 100th patient in its SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion study.
Here are four things to know:
1. The 40-site trial will include 250 patients.
2. Researchers aim to evaluate how SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion impacts patients' long-term fusion and pain reduction.
3. Orthopedic surgeon Antoine G. Tohmeh, MD, of Spokane, Wash.-based Deaconess Hospital performed the 100th operation.
4. Zyga recently announced the positive results of a 19-patient study on minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion surgery with decortication.
Dr. Tohmeh said, "Spine surgeons know that any metal implant will weaken over time. To ensure that a patient's clinical benefit lasts, a true fusion, including decortication, bone grafting and fixation, is critical."
