5 powerhouse companies in the global MIS spine market

The global minimally invasive spine surgery market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.57 percent through 2020, according to an Absolute Report analysis.

Analysts noted the following five companies as key players in the market:

 

DePuy Synthes. A Johnson & Johnson company, Raynham, Mass.-based DePuy Synthes offers a variety of MIS lateral, posterior and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion solutions. Platforms include the MIS Lateral Platform, VIPER 2, SPOTLIGHT system, CONCORDE system, T-PAL system and INSIGHT system.  Johnson & Johnson orthopedics saw spine and other net sales of $933 million in the first quarter of 2017, reflecting a 3.6 percent year-over-year decrease.

 

Medtronic. The Dublin, Ireland-based company offers a variety of minimal access spine technology systems, such as the METRx and CD Horizon systems. Additionally, Medtronic offers minimally invasive non-fusion procedures, including Kyphon. In August 2016, Medtronic placed a $20 million investment in Caesarea, Israel-based Mazor Robotics, including a purchase order for 15 Mazor X systems. Medtronic reported spine revenue of $657 million for the third quarter fiscal year, a 3 percent increase year-over-year.

 

NuVasive. Based in San Diego, NuVasive offers a portfolio of minimally disruptive products, including access instruments, biologics, fixation, interbody implants and neuromonitoring. Supported by more than 350 published clinical studies, the company's eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion procedure decreases operating time and blood loss; decreases hospital stay; reduces postoperative pain; and quickens recovery. NuVasive saw net revenue of $250 million for the first quarter of 2017, reflecting a 16.2 percent year-over-year increase.

 

Stryker. Headquartered in Kalamazoo, Mich., Stryker offers a variety of MIS spine systems, devices and implants. The company's MIS portfolio includes:

•    LITe Decompression Tubes
•    Xia Precision (Cannulated) Implant
•    MANTIS Implants
•    Phantom Retractor System

•    LITe LIF Procedure

 

Stryker reported neurotechnology and spine net sales of $520 million for the first quarter of 2017, a 7.3 percent jump year-over-year.

 

Zimmer Biomet. The Warsaw, Ind.-based company offers several MIS spine solutions, including the PathFinder NXT Minimally Invasive Pedicle Screw System, Alpine XC Adjustable Fusion System and Aspen MIS Fusion System. In 2016, Zimmer Biomet acquired Medtech and its ROSA Surgical Robots, which are designed to enhance minimally invasive spine and brain surgery. Zimmer Biomet saw spine and CMF sales of  $186 million, reflecting a 32 percent increase year-over-year.
