Sukdeb Datta, MD, performed the first Multizyte surgery in the U.S. aimed to treat pain caused by the sacroiliac joint.
Here are five things to know.
1. The endoscopic technique magnifies nerves around the sacroiliac joint so surgeons can perform a minimally invasive procedure to relieve pain.
2. The Multizyte procedure is performed with patients under local anesthesia and requires a short recovery time.
3. Dr. Datta's first patient had previously undergone spine surgery but still felt low back pain. Dr. Datta was able to pinpoint the sacroiliac joint as the pain generator and performed the Multizyte procedure.
4. Dr. Datta served as the director of interventional pain management at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University as well as division chief of pain medicine and program director of the multidisciplinary pain medicine fellowship at Vanderbilt before opening his own practice, Datta Endoscopic.
5. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Datta is active in translational pain research. He has also authored several book chapters and serves as an associate editor of Pain Physician journal.
