The percentage of spine surgeries performed in outpatient and ASC settings has jumped over the past year, and Leerink expects to see continued growth over the next 12 months.
According to a Leerink Partners Survey conducted in June, over the past 12 months the percentage of spine surgeries performed in the outpatient setting increased 20 percent, while the percentage of spine surgeries performed in the ASC jumped 10 percent.
The trend toward more outpatient spine surgery follows the overall trend driving procedures to the high-quality, low-cost site of service. Minimally invasive spine surgery techniques and advanced pain management allow surgeons to perform cases for select patients successfully in the outpatient setting.
Over the next 12 months, Leerink expects the percentage of spine surgery in ASCs to increase 11 percent and the percentage of outpatient spine surgeries to increase 20 percent. The report was generated from a survey of 47 hospital administrators.
By comparison, the percentage of knee surgeries in the ASC setting increased 12 percent in the past year and is expected to jump another 13 percent in the next 12 months.
