MIS decompression safe, effective for diabetic patients, study finds — 3 notes

MIS

Minimally invasive spinal decompression surgery is safe and effective for diabetic patients, according to a study in the European Spine Journal.

Here are three things to know:

1. Researchers compared medical records of 48 diabetic patients and 151 control patients who underwent minimally invasive lumbar decompressions between April 2009 and July 2014 at the Tel Aviv (Israel) Sourasky Medical Center.

2. No major postoperative complications occurred in either group. Both groups had the same postoperative length of stay, minor complications and revision rates.

3. The study authors conclude MIS decompression does not pose an increased risk of complications for diabetic patients.
