Vertos Medical's MIS procedure is safe, effective for LSS: 5 study insights

MIS

Vertos Medical's minimally invasive lumbar decompression procedure is a safe and effective lumbar spinal stenosis treatment, according to study results in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.

Here are five things to know:

1. The prospective, multicenter study compared outcomes of 143 patients with LSS and neurogenic claudication due to hypertrophic ligamentum flavum treated with MILD and 131 patients treated with epidural steroid injections.

2. There was no evidence of spinal instability or fractures in patients who underwent the MILD procedure.

3. The MILD procedure had no device- or procedure-related serious adverse events as well as a lower complication rate than more invasive spine procedures.

4. Authors concluded a higher level of safety when using the MILD procedure compared to other spine interventions, such as decompression and fusion.

5. The study also found LSS patients with bulging disc, facet hypertrophy and foraminal narrowing, among other conditions, achieved statistically significant pain relief and mobility improvement. Study authors conclude the presence of those comorbidities should not exclude a patient from being considered for MILD.
