CMS granted a new technology add-on payment for magnetically controlled growth rods.
Here are five things to know:
1. Technology must demonstrate a substantial clinical improvement relative to the available alternatives on the market in order to qualify for the new technology add-on payment. MAGEC from NuVasive is the only magnetically controlled growth modulation system with FDA clearance for pediatric spinal deformity.
2. The new code is effective Oct. 1, 2016 and will provide reimbursement to hospitals and health systems for use with Medicare patients who have early onset scoliosis in addition to the DRG reimbursement of up to 50 percent of the cost of MAGEC.
3. MAGEC is a sterile, single use spinal rod surgically implanted during growth and includes a small magnet controlled by an external remote controller. The periodic lengthening of the rod can externally distract the spine in an office setting, eliminating distraction surgeries.
4. The procedure can reduce planned distractions from up to 15 procedures to a single procedure.
5. Ellipse Technologies originally developed MAGEC; NuVasive acquired the technology earlier this year for $380 million.
