R. Michael Gross, MD, a shoulder specialist at GIKK Ortho Specialists in Omaha, Neb., describes two advances in shoulder surgery he finds most exciting.
1. Shoulder surgery in general has many new techniques and technology that are innovative. With total shoulder arthroplasty, there is continued standardization of the arthroplasty itself but multiple opportunities for soft tissue reconstruction and rehabilitation exist. Maximizing these opportunities will improve patient care.
2. For shoulder arthroscopy, the transition from metal to bioabsorbable to 5:49 Peek implants has been exciting. The dawn of composites may further address implant compatibility. The rehabilitation with these implants which has gone through pendulum changes is becoming standardized and appropriate for the biology of healing. Final consensus with the above techniques that match Mother Nature's healing will optimize our results from shoulder arthroscopy.
