Compensation of Two UC San Diego Physicians Tops $1M

In 2010, the highest-paid employee of the University of California San Diego Health System was not former CEO Thomas Jackiewicz — who made $819,059 — but Stuart Jamieson, MD, head of UCSD Health System's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, who made $1,169,970, according to a San Diego Reader report. The only other UCSD Health System employee who made more than $1 million was Robert Weinreb, MD, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and director of the UCSD Shiley Eye Center. In 2010, Dr. Weinreb's salary and benefits totaled $1,014,670.

Other high-paid physicians within the UCSD Health System were Michael Levy, MD, PhD, clinical professor of surgery at the UCSD School of Medicine and chief of pediatric neurological surgery at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, who earned $848,850 in 2010. William Freeman, MD, professor and director of the Jacobs Retina Center at the UCSD Shiley Eye Center, made $773,184.

The highest-compensated female physician was Mary Lenora Hilfiker, MD, PhD, clinical professor of surgery at UCSD School of Medicine and division chief for pediatric surgery at Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego. Her compensation was $697,654 in 2010.
