Avoid malpractice dangers that EHRs could create: 5 strategies

Practice Management

Electronic health records can create certain malpractice risks, particularly if the system has issues that you didn't cause or are aware of, according to a report by Medscape Business of Medicine.

Here are five strategies physicians can use to protect themselves and their practices from the malpractice risks that EHRs can create:

1. Assume that you need to understand everything about the EHR system.
2. Do sufficient analysis of the product, and the design of the office workflow and processes.
3. Recognize that switching from paper to EHRs is an ongoing process, and account for it in your week.
4. Document your selection process for your EHR.
5. Analyze, design, and plan to make sure you adequately vet the EHR itself and the setup you establish.
