Med students take on 'Doctors for Diversity' — 5 notes

The University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the Whitehead Medical Society hosted "Doctors for Diversity" for medical students and faculty to discuss why diversity is crucial in patient care, according to daily tar heel.

Here are five notes:

 

1. The event was held in the Medical Bimolecular Research Building and was organized by student members of the Resident Diversity Initiative and the Diversity Council.

 

2. Co-President of the Whitehead Medical Society, Patrick O'Shea, stated the event is a starting point for necessary conversations about diversity.

 

3. At the event, speakers will present on topics within diversity such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, background, ideas and education.

 

4. The event is particularity beneficial for medical students because it will help them evaluate their roles in promoting healthcare disparities. Kenya McNeal-Trice, program director of pediatrics residency, said, "Your interactions and your relationships may change the trajectory of how you see others."

 

5. Each of the student organizations had representatives give "Student Reflections" which consisted of speeches and word performances.
