Healthcare-related artificial intelligence to grow tenfold in the next 5 years — 4 takeaways

Practice Management

The use of artificial intelligence in healthcare is expected to grow tenfold in the next five years, according to News-Medical.

Here are four takeaways:

1. In a clinical setting, AI will be able to use patient data, including genetic sequences, to empower clinicians to make informed healthcare decisions based on the latest and most effective treatment options for each patient.

2. Computer-aided diagnosis and treatment is currently being studied at 16 cancer institutes in partnership with IBM's Watson Health AI venture.

3. In terms of medical research, AI is helping speed up the selection of drug target for development. Companies such as AiCure are using AI on smartphones to confirm that patients are taking their medication, increasing adherence. The technology can also help people manage their own health for disease prevention.

4. Increasingly, companies are using AI to enhance their capabilities. For example, InSilico Medicine, a biotechnology company, is using AI to guess a person's age.
