Orthopedic surgeon John Dietz, MD, is on the forefront of the evolving orthopedic industry. He is leading OrthoIndy's efforts to expand its urgent care clinics and is heading a leading foundation to provide care to Indiana residents.
"John is a remarkable person and leader. He has a wonderful reputation as a surgeon. With that as his starting point, he has been a tremendous contributor and leader in both charitable, association and business efforts," said Scott Becker, publisher of Becker's Hospital Review. "Whether it's the Physician Hospital Association, OrthoIndy, the YMCA or new business efforts, he is always a highly principled, thoughtful energetic participant and leader."
Here are five key points on Dr. Dietz:
1. As chair of OrthoIndy Foundation, Dr. Dietz played an integral role in its partnership with the YMCA and the VA. In March, OrthoIndy Foundation pledged a $3 million donation to build a new Indianapolis 45,000-square-foot facility, named OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA. YMCA's mission to serve veterans and the public resonated with OrthoIndy, and spurred their decision to donate.
2. Dr. Dietz has worked to transition OrthoIndy's musculoskeletal healthcare delivery system into a long-term strategy. He had headed the effort to grow OrthoIndy's network of orthopedic urgent care clinics. In July 2015, OrthoIndy launched an initiative to develop urgent care clinics. The practice said it will allot $3.8 million over the next three years to develop urgent care clinics.
3. With Dr. Dietz spearheading the efforts, OrthoIndy has opened four urgent care clinics and plans to open a fifth clinic in nearly a month. The practice has plans to open two more urgent care clinics for a total of seven urgent care clinics. Urgent care is projected to increase 5.8 percent each year through 2018.
4. Dr. Dietz has held several leadership roles with OrthoIndy. From 2002 to 2013, he served as chairman of the OrthoIndy Hospital Board. He also has served on OrthoIndy's board of directors from 1999 to 2016. OrthoIndy has served patients for more than 50 years, and is comprised of more than 70 physicians throughout central Indiana. "Integrity-driven leadership is the most successful long term strategy," Dr. Dietz said.
5. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Dr. Dietz earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. He went on to complete his orthopedic residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., and finished his spine surgery fellowship at Seattle-based Swedish Hospital Medical Center.
"Trust is your biggest asset," Dr. Dietz said. "People everywhere are looking for someone they can trust. You earn trust by consistently doing the right thing for the right reason. A successful business is just a byproduct of earning that trust."
