Zippia analyzed the National Practitioner Data Bank to discover where physicians are most likely to get sued in the United States, according to Medscape.
The website compiled its list based on the number of suits per 100,000 residents.
Here are five things to know:
1. Hawaii had the least number of suits, with only 4.9 suits per 100,000 residents.
2. Zippia found the following 10 states fell low on the spectrum of malpractice cases per residents:
• North Carolina: 10 cases
• Georgia: 11.3 cases
• South Dakota: 12.1 cases
• New Hampshire: 13.4 cases
• Idaho: 13.6
• Illinois: 14.3
• Montana: 14.8 cases
• Utah: 15 cases
• Iowa: 15.2
• Massachusetts: 15.3 cases
3. Louisiana had the highest rate of suits per residents, with the state having 44.1 suits per 100,000 residents.
4. The next 10 states had the highest number of suits:
• Oklahoma: 36.3 cases
• Delaware: 35.2 cases
• Wyoming: 34 cases
• Tennessee: 33 cases
• Arkansas: 32.2 cases
• New Jersey: 30.4 cases
• Maine: 30.2 cases
• West Virginia: 29.6 cases
• Alabama: 29.5 cases
• Washington: 29 cases
5. The website's list has various limitations as it fails to include the number of physician versus non-physician suits as well as compare states by the number of payouts per population.
