5 trends for physician practice EHR use

Practice Management

Few outpatient healthcare providers plan to replace their electronic health records, according to a Health Data Management report based on information from HIMSS Analytics.

Here are five things to know:

1. Close to 80 percent of freestanding physician practices have EHR, according ot the report, up from around 30 percent in 2010.

2. EHR adoption among hospital-owned physician practices is around 90 percent.

3. Around 15 percent of physician practices plan to change EHR or replace their original purchases. There will likely be some “churn” in the market however, as providers may experience buyer's remorse, according to the report.

4. Providers are now looking ahead to meet the Medicare Access and CHIP Reqorganization Act requirements and there are opportunities for EHR vendors in that space. Providers will likely need "hand-holding" from vendors to get through the MACRA transition.

5. The EHR tools market has grown significantly over the past few years, but a robust replacement market hasn’t developed yet.
