The Winter Park, Fla.-based Association of Independent Doctors now holds members in more than half of the nation's states, after adding a member in Ohio this past week.
Here's what you need to know:
1. AID was founded by 100 independent physicians and two public accountants in April 2013.
2. The organization aims to help physicians stay independent, pushing back against the trend of hospitals acquiring independent physicians and medical practices. Tom Thomas, one of the organization's cofounders, says fewer independent physicians leads to less competition and higher healthcare costs.
3. Since its founding three and a half years ago, AID has grown to 1,000 members across multiple states.
4. AID has chapters in four states: Florida, California, Maine and South Carolina.
5. This past month, AID increased membership in seven states: Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Utah.
