Surveyed orthopedists reported their weekly schedules, noting how many hours per week they block for patient visits.
• Less than 30 hours — 10 percent
• Thirty to 45 hours — 49 percent
• Forty-six to 55 hours — 23 percent
• Fifty-six to 65 hours — 12 percent
• More than 65 hours — 4 percent
Office-based orthopedists further reported how many minutes they personally spend with each patient.
• Less than nine minutes — 12 percent
• Nine to 12 minutes — 36 percent
• Thirteen to 16 minutes — 30 percent
• Seventeen to 24 minutes — 19 percent
• Twenty-five minutes or more — 3 percent
Based on the survey, orthopedists spend the following amount of time on paperwork and administration per week.
• Less than five hours — 12 percent
• Five to nine hours — 28 percent
• Ten to 19 hours — 43 percent
• Twenty or more hours —16 percent
