Medscape published its “2018 Physician Lifestyle & Happiness Report” which surveyed physicians on a variety of lifestyle factors including happiness.
Medscape asked 15,543 physicians to rank their happiness outside of work on a scale from one (extremely unhappy) to seven (extremely happy). Here are five key findings:
1. Most physicians, 38 percent, reported to be very happy outside of work while 12 percent are extremely happy.
2. A small proportion, 3 percent, reported being extremely unhappy outside of work, and a total of 21 percent said they are either very unhappy, somewhat unhappy or neither unhappy nor happy.
3. When comparing happiness between specialties, 54 percent of orthopedic physicians said they were the happiest outside of work.
4. With 54 percent of orthopedic physicians reporting to be happy outside of work, the specialty ranked eighth when compared to other specialties.
5. Allergy and immunology physicians are the happiest, 61 percent, while cardiology physicians reported the least happiness, 40 percent.
