Atrium Health's Musculoskeletal Institute names Dr. Claude Moorman president: 5 things to know

Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health named orthopedic surgeon Claude Moorman, III, MD, president of Atrium Health's Musculoskeletal Institute and the Edward N. Hanley, Jr., Endowed Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Stanly News & Press reports.

Here are five things to know:

1. The Musculoskeletal Institute is an interdisciplinary center with orthopedic, sports medicine and spine care providers, researchers and educators. Its orthopedic surgery residency program is a combined effort of Atrium's department of orthopedic surgery, OrthoCarolina and Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates.

2. Before joining Atrium, Dr. Moorman was the executive director of the Durham, N.C.-based James R. Urbaniak Sports Sciences Institute at Duke University Medical Center, as well as a professor and vice chairman of the orthopedic department and head team physician for Duke University Athletics.

3. Dr. Moorman founded the sports medicine program at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and serving as UM Medical Center's director of sports medicine from 1996 to 2001, acting as a team physician for the Baltimore Ravens and UM Athletics.

4. Dr. Moorman specializes in multiple ligament knee injury and regenerative medicine. He has authored more than 150 publications and has been recognized with the Neer Award and Excellence in Research Award for his work in shoulder reconstruction.

5. He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Moorman completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
