West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute in Morgantown is offering a new FDA-approved treatment, MR-guided focused ultrasound, reports WVU Medicine.
Three insights:
1. MR-guided ultrasound is used to treat essential tremor and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease and requires no radiation exposure.
2. It uses non-audible sound waves rather than incisions, brain implants or radiation. The waves target a precise area in the brain to stop the tremor during a single treatment session.
3. WVU Medicine neurologists work with neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and other specialists to help patients regain optimal motor control of their bodies.
"As a healthcare provider, there is nothing more rewarding than being able to improve a patient's quality of life," said Ann Murray, MD, director of the WVU Comprehensive Movement Disorders Clinic. "This new technology is one of the many tools we now have to get patients back to living the life they want."
