The Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Foundation for Opioid Research & Education was established June 30.
The Philadelphia-based health system plans to advance research and education to find solutions to the opioid epidemic — responsible for an average of 130 overdose deaths every day in the U.S., according to the CDC.
The Rothman Opioid Foundation will raise awareness of the risks and benefits of safe opioid use as well as educate patients, physicians and policymakers. It will also research pain management strategies for ways to reduce opioid use and promote alternative treatments.
Asif Ilyas, MD, is founder and president of the foundation, which will hold its first fundraiser in July.
