Lawrence Kirschenbaum, MD, and his practice will pay thousands of dollars to resolve claims they violated the Controlled Substances Act.
Four details:
1. Dr. Kirschenbaum was accused of writing "early fill" prescriptions of controlled substances from April 2017 to January 2019. The government alleges Dr. Kirschenbaum violated civil provisions of the Controlled Substances Act by writing prescriptions for 40 patients before their previous prescriptions should have been finished.
2. Dr. Kirschenbaum and Fairfield, Conn.-based Orthopaedic Specialty Group agreed to pay $80,000 as part of a settlement agreement.
3. The settlement also requires Dr. Kirschenbaum and Orthopaedic Specialty Group to stop dispensing Schedule II controlled substances.
4. Dr. Kirschenbaum is the director of interventional pain medicine and restorative medicine at the practice, which also includes orthopedics, spine and sports medicine.
