Alabama hospital opens $150M orthopedic & spine tower

Practice Management

Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital opened its $150 million Orthopedic & Spine Tower in August, AL.com reported Sept. 22.

Construction of the tower, the hospital's largest construction project to date, began in 2018. It is seven stories tall, has 24 orthopedic surgery suites and 72 private rooms.

The hospital was mum about the tower's opening, but plans to celebrate are still in the works, CEO Jeff Samz said. The tower is operating at about one third of its capacity, and the hospital is working to hire staff.

"Whenever the dust settles, we’ll have a ribbon cutting and we’ll celebrate the project because not only does it create a great space for orthopedics, the building’s incredible," Mr. Samz told AL.com. "But it empties out beds in the main hospital. So in the long run for the community, it’s not only for orthopedics but it’s to create more overall capacity. That was our big investment."
