A bill that would require international background checks for all those seeking to practice medicine in New Jersey was approved today by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, according to a PolitickerNJ report.
Here are three things to know:
1. The legislation would prohibit the Board of Medical Examiners from issuing or renewing a license to any applicant until it has determined that he or she does not have a criminal history in any foreign country.
2. The bill also requires the board to contact all previous employers identified by the applicant to ensure he or she has a sound moral character.
3. The bill was introduced in response to the case of Richard Kaul, MD, an anesthesiologist in New Jersey who advertised himself as a spinal surgeon and performed spinal procedures, without the proper education or training.
