Lockport, NY patients look elsewhere for care after 2 pain clinics close

Practice Management

Eugene Gosy, MD, closed his office in Lockport, N.Y., after he was indicted on 114 counts of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and healthcare fraud last week; he pleaded not guilty, according to a WGRZ report.

And in the wake of this closure, the physicians of Lockport Rehabilitation and Pain Management Center decided to move forward with a planned closure on Friday. As a result, many pain patients in the area are having a difficult time seeking care, according to an ABC 7 report.

Patients are told to seek out primary care physicians, but those physicians are fearful of prosecution for prescribing pain killers according to the report. Dr. Gosy wasn't required to close his office, according to the report, and other practitioners there could prescribe the controlled medications in his absence.

The WGRZ report cited a source that takes around "100 calls per hour" from Dr. Gosy's patients. Dr. Gosy has 10,000 patients and is among the largest pain practices in the state.
