Pursuing a nursing career in today's healthcare environment proves competitive, according to Medpage Today.

Here are three observations:

1. For the 2014-2015 academic year, there were 265,000 qualified nursing applicants for 119,000 bachelor of science in nursing positions, according to Medpage Today.

2. This resulted in a total 45 percent acceptance rate, rejecting 146,000 eligible applicants.

3. By 2025, it is anticipated that there will be a nursing shortage of between 700,000 nurses and 900,000 nurses.
