Cambridge, Mass.-based MIT Sloan School of Management is piloting a new course this fall, focused on healthcare finance.

1. The new course will focus on applying financing methods in the healthcare industry to create an environment for drug discovery, clinical development and better patient access to costly therapies.
2. The course will leverage financial techniques like portfolio theory, securitization and derivative securities to fit biomedical contexts.
3. Specific course topics include:
- Financial analysis for life sciences professionals
- Historical financial risks and returns of biotech and pharmaceutical industries
- Mechanics of biotech startup financing
- Capital budgeting for pharmaceutical companies
- Applications of financial engineering in drug royalty investment companies, biomedical megafunds, drug approval swaps and life sciences investment banking
4. The Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor, Andrew W. Lo, PhD, will teach the healthcare finance course.
5. Dr. Lo also serves as the director of the Laboratory for Financial Engineering at MIT Sloan.
