Fracture-liaison service increasing outcomes in post-fracture care: 6 takeaways

Practice Management

Implementing a fracture-liaison service improves the outcomes of patients in post-fracture care, according to a demonstration project reported in Medscape.

Here's what you should know.

1. Andrea Singer, MD, was part of a project presented at the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research that studied the effects of implementing a care liaison for fracture patients.

2. Physicians at Georgetown University Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Creighton Health all surveyed their patients which "demonstrated how terrible a job we were doing [at treating patients with Osteoporosis]," Dr. Singer said.

3. The physicians introduced the Fracture Liaison Service application to their care team that allows coordination of post-fracture care

4. In the study, 148 patients were reviewed after the physicians followed the FLS app.

Physicians saw an increase in follow-up bone-mineral density tests. Before the app, the rate was at 21.2 percent. After the app was implemented the rate raised to almost 93 percent.

5. Vitamin D level monitoring also saw a similar jump from 22 percent to 84 percent.

6. Prescriptions increased from 19.5 percent to more than 54 percent after the app was introduced.
