The Andrews Research & Education Foundation Surgical Skills Lab at the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Fla., has undergone an upgrade, including new and renovated equipment.
The Andrews Institute uses the surgical skills lab to practice arthroscopic procedures, record dissection videos for presentations and train health professionals in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound, among other capabilities.
Here are five of the lab's new upgrades:
1. New arthroscopy cameras, so that physicians can view the inside of the body while performing surgery.
2. High-definition monitors to display camera images in real time, in an effort to provide clear visualization for the surgeon performing the procedure.
3. Upgraded surgical shavers for tissue resection and bone debridement.
4. New pumps to remove fluid, resected tissue and debrided bone material, to ensure clear visualization of the procedure area as it is being performed.
5. New arthroscopy and work stations, which take the place of old cabinets and counter islands. With these additions, the lab will be able to accommodate more people during training sessions.
