AHCA in Louisville: Why does Trump continue returning to Kentucky's biggest city? — 5 things to know

Practice Management

President Donald Trump promoted the AHCA at a Louisville rally attended by several prominent Kentucky lawmakers and a large crowd of supporters, according to Biz Journals.

1. This was President Trump's third visit to Louisville in the last year and his first as president. Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Kentucky State Sen. Ralph Alvarado, MD, R-28, were among the notable attendees.

2. Sen. Alvarado spoke before the president about how he and many other physicians had to sell their independent practices to larger healthcare companies to stay afloat in the midst of ACA regulations.

3. Kentucky is seen as a national healthcare battleground. Former President Barack Obama touted the state's successful ACA roll-out and former Governor Steve Beshear cited its impact on increased healthcare for Kentucky citizens through Medicaid expansion. Incumbent Gov. Bevin strongly opposes the ACA.

4. Sen. McConnell and Sen. Rand Paul, MD, R-Ky., disagree on the AHCA's potential impact. Sen. McConnell strongly supports the legislation while Sen. Paul believes it doesn't do enough to repeal the ACA and it would result in insurance companies "socializing the losses and privatizing the gain" of the health insurance business.

5. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer skipped the rally and said, "The ACA needs to be improved, but the Trumpcare proposal is not the way to do it… I urge president Trump to slow this process down, keep his promises, and pass a plan that improves the health of the workers and families of our city, our state and our country."
