The National Resident Matching Program reported statistics from the 2017 Main Residency Match, via its "Results and Data Book."
Here are five insights:
1. This year's match set a record for the number of registered applicants (43,157) and positions (31,757).
2. NRMP reports 30,478 filled positions at the end of the process. Through the Match Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program, 1,076 positions of the 1,177 total positions were filled.
3. In total, 31,554 positions were filled.
4. The number of U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen international medical school students and graduates who participated in the match decreased; but their match rates proved to be the highest in more than a decade.
5. Since 2013, the categories of internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics have increased positions by 2,900 in total.
