HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, resigned Sept. 29 in the midst of an inspector general investigation, according to The New York Times.

Here are five insights:

 

1. Dr. Price spent at least $400,000 on private planes for government business trips.

 

2. He offered to pay the government back $51,887, which President Donald Trump deemed "unacceptable."

 

3. Part of Dr. Price's resignation letter to President Trump read: "I have spent 40 years both as a doctor and public servant putting people first. I regret that the recent events have created a distraction from these important objectives," NYT reports.

 

4. Don J. Wright, MD, a deputy assistant secretary for health and Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion director, stepped in as acting HHS secretary.
