Hoag Neurosciences Institute in Newport Beach, Calif., received a $15 million donation from the Pickup Family Foundation, according to the OC Register.
Here are five notes:
1. With the $15 million donation, which comes on the institute's 10th anniversary, Hoag renamed the institute the Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute.
2. Researchers and physicians at Hoag specialize in cognitive disorders, stroke, epilepsy and back and spine issues. The center includes hybrid imaging, radiation devices and an augmented reality 3-D surgical theater.
3. Next year the institute plans to open a rehabilitation center to provide follow-up care for patients recovering from strokes and other acute brain traumas.
4. The Pickups are longtime local philanthropists. The family noted the gift follows the loss of a family member to Alzheimer's disease.
5. Hoag Neurosciences has another location in Irvine, Calif., and is part of the seven-hospital St. Joseph Hoag Health alliance in Orange County, Calif.
