The average net revenue physicians generate for their affiliated hospitals is $1.56 million, according to the Merritt Hawkins 2016 Physician Inpatient/Outpatient Revenue Survey.
The survey asked 3,500 hospital CFOs to quantify the outpatient and inpatient revenue that physicians from 18 different specialties generated in the past year, including revenue from patient referrals, tests and prescriptions.
Here are the top four revenue-generating specialties:
1. Orthopedic surgery: $2.74 million
2. Invasive cardiology: $2.44 million
3. Neurosurgery: $2.44 million
4. General surgery: $2.16 million
