COVINGTON, LA – Avala, formerly Fairway Medical Center, is now the only healthcare facility in Louisiana, Mississippi or Arkansas offering robotic-assisted surgeries for total hip replacement, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement and spine surgery.
Avala Hospital installed the latest advancements from Stryker’s Mako Technology for orthopaedic surgery and a state-of-the-art Globus ExcelsiusGPS navigational robot used in minimally invasive spine procedures. This technology will provide for faster, more accurate procedures and allow patients a shorter recovery period.
The Globus ExcelsiusGPS uses pre-operative images of each specific patient to help Avala spine surgeons plan specifically for surgery and determine the size and placement of implants during the procedure. Intra-operative images and navigation technology assists in guiding the surgeons through the procedure to increase accuracy in placing pedicles screws with less exposure to radiation.
According to Dr. K. Samer Shamieh, Avala’s Chairman of the Board: “Stryker Mako Technology allows orthopaedic surgeons to visualize each patient’s anatomy with patient-specific 3D models. During surgery, the technology guides the surgeon with bone cutting, and inserting artificial joints.”
“Avala first offered robotics-assisted surgeries in August of 2018. Since then, surgeons have successfully performed 20 robotic-assisted spine surgeries, and 54 robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgeries at Avala Hospital.”
