Big trends in hip surgery + why vertical integration of musculoskeletal services is the way of the future: 3 Qs with Dr. Shane Nho

Practice Management

Shane Nho, MD, is a hip arthroscopy and sports medicine specialist at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago. He is also the director of hip preservation at Rush University Medical Center, where he focuses his practice on hip, shoulder and knee treatment.

In addition to clinical care, Dr. Nho is an active researcher and co-head of the Hip Study Group at Rush. Here, Dr. Nho discusses the big challenges for orthopedics in 2019 and what he is most excited about for the future.

Question: What are the top challenges you're facing heading into 2019?

Dr. Shane Nho: The first challenge to expect is market consolidation as well as growth strategies for independent orthopedic practices. Another is keeping up with new technologies and research in orthopedic surgery.

Q: What technology are you most excited about in the future?

SN: There are interesting technologies that incorporate intraoperative image guidance for hip arthroscopy. Stryker sports medicine is introducing a tablet that can be used during surgery to measure the size and location of hip femoroacetabular impingement deformities. In addition, the software is able to assess in real time when the surgical correction has been completed. For surgeons performing hip arthroscopy, the technology will provide the intraoperative guidance that has been missing. I believe that this will allow us to be more accurate as well as more efficient in the operating room.

Q: What is your best opportunity for growth?

SN: Ancillary service lines for independent orthopedic practices need to be a focus for orthopedic surgeons that want to stay independent. Vertical integration of the entire musculoskeletal service line will be the way of the future. Historically, we have been focused on our own professional fees, but with declining reimbursement we will have to stay focused on keeping as much of our services within the organization. It allows for more efficient delivery of orthopedic services as well as improved communication between healthcare providers. Ultimately, I believe that this will provide more efficient and improved care for our patients.
