Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute plans to open a 40,000-square-foot orthopedic facility in Crown Point, Ind., according to The Times of Northwest Indiana.
Five highlights:
1. The new location is intended to keep patients from traveling to Chicago, Indianapolis or South Bend, Ind., for care.
"A generation ago ... people would go to Chicago for spine surgery," Lakeshore President Thomas Kay, MD, told The Times. "We just didn't have that type of service available. Now, that service is here. It's great for the quality of life of our community."
2. Lakeshore's new building will have 65 full-time employees, with the capacity to handle up to 300 patient visits a day.
3. Lakeshore has already been renting space in Crown Point, but will expand services at the new facility. "We have had a growing number of doctors working out of the Crown Point Franciscan facility for the last seven to eight years," Dr. Kay said. "We've gotten to a point where we want to build our own office to provide further services to the community."
4. Lakeshore also has locations in Chesterton, Portage, Valparaiso, Schererville, Michigan City, LaPort and Knox, all in Indiana.
5. The orthopedic practice, which is the largest in Northwest Indiana, recently celebrated its 50th year in business. It has been "growing steadily" over the past 10 to 15 years, Dr. Kay said.
