Twin Cities Orthopedics taps new CEO: 10 practice notes for 2020

Practice Management

Twin Cities Orthopedics announced a new CEO last month — one of 12 practices to do so in 2020 — with the current CEO moving on after seven years at the head of the organization.

Here are 10 things to know about the Golden Valley, Minn.-based practice:

1. Seven independent groups merged to form the practice in the late 1960s. Richard Sletten, MD, co-founded the group with two other physicians.

2. In October, Aaron Johnson was named CEO. He will transition into the role over the next few months, succeeding Troy Simonson, who has held the role since 2013.

3. Mr. Simonson will focus on his role as CEO of Revo Health, which TCO formed in 2017 to support growth initiatives.

4. Autonomy remains a central pillar for TCO, which recently partnered with three other practices to form the Infinite Health Collaborative to maintain physicians' autonomy in the face of industry consolidation.

5. The practice has more than three dozen locations114 physicians and almost 1,700 employees.

6. Several professional sports organizations are affiliated with the group, including the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins and Minneapolis City Soccer Club. Renown sports medicine specialist Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD, left The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., to join TCO in July 2019.

7. TCO performs more than 2,500 spine surgeries and 10,000 total joint surgeries a year.

8. The practice told Becker's that 2,200 total joint procedures are expected to be done as part of its prospective commercial bundle program in 2020.

9. The average cost of a total joint replacement through TCO's Excel Orthopedic Surgery and Recovery Program is $23,750.

10. Last year, TCO had 439,205 clinical visits and saw 101,913 new patients, according to its 2019 Year in Review. Patients came from all 50 states and eight countries to receive care.
