The Palm Beach County, Fla., zoning commission unanimously endorsed plans for a 24-bed surgical hospital in Delray Beach, Fla., The Palm Beach Post reported July 12.
The commission agreed there's a "strong need" for the facility. The proposed South Florida Spine & Orthopedic Institute would be operated by 29 orthopedic surgeons, and they would perform as many as 3,000 surgeries a year.
However, the surgical hospital has faced opposition. The Alliance of Delray Residential Association has argued that two other nearby hospitals serve the community's needs.
The Palm Beach County Commission will vote on plans July 22.
