5 updates from Hospital for Special Surgery in 60 days

From a landmark knee replacement to plans for new construction, here are five updates from New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery since Sept. 6.

1. Peter Sculco, MD, and Fred Cushner, MD, completed the first knee replacement with a smart implant enabling remote monitoring.

2. Spire Orthopedic Partners, a management services organization, hired Lori Funari as COO. She was previously vice president of physician practice management for HSS.

3. HSS will anchor a 30-story medical office building, Extell Development Co. said Oct. 25. Construction is expected to begin in 2022.

4. HSS was one of five New York hospitals that received Healthgrades' 2022 Spine Surgery Excellence award.

5. The hospital received the Betty J. Cleckley Minority Issues Research Award from the American Public Health Association. The award recognizes those who made a significant impact on the lives of older people who are in minority groups.
