4 ways hospitals and health systems are cashing in on orthopedics

Practice Management

Since January, hospitals and health systems have banked on partnerships and multimillion-dollar initiatives to bolster spine and orthopedic care.

Four things to know:

1. Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, Calif., plans to build a $58 million neurosciences center with 50 beds. The Sharp Grossmont Hospital Neurosciences Center will treat a range of conditions, including cancerous tumors of the head, neck and spine and blood clots in the brain that can cause strokes.

2. Baton Rouge, La.-based Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center acquired a controlling interest in The Spine Hospital of Louisiana, located in the same city. The move is expected to round out Our Lady of the Lake's neurological services.

3. Iowa City-based Steindler Orthopedic Clinic is partnering with Mercy Iowa City for orthopedic care. The companies plan to collaborate on a medical park in North Liberty, Iowa, to improve access to orthopedic care in eastern Iowa.

4. West Boca Medical Center in Boca Raton, Fla., is opening a dedicated center for spine and orthopedic care. The Boca Center for Orthopedics and Spine Care will have eight patient rooms, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient physical therapy.
