New device accelerating recovery for patients with back pain — 5 notes

Orthopedic

The interspinous device coflex was developed to help patients with back pain recover faster, allowing patients to get back to their lives.

Here are five notes:

1. Back pain is the second most common reason for medical visits with more than 65 million Americans experiencing back pain.

2. The device would replace spinal fusion surgery, which would previously result in limited mobility as well as a lengthy recovery time and a weakened spine.

3. Thomas Scully, MD, of Northwest Neuro Specialists in Tucson, Ariz., is one of the first surgeons to utilize the device. He stated the device stabilize the spine while allowing some movement.

4. The device is a simple support system for those individuals with lumbar stenosis, and it diminishes the risk of adjacent level risk. The device has a wealth of benefits with the primary benefits resulting in smaller incisions, less blood loss and a speedy recovery.

5. Other devices have been devised for those suffering from radiation caused by cervical disc disease. Similar to the coflex device, such innovations will allow for more movement resulting in less long-term pain and less likelihood of needing future surgery.
