Women who currently practice orthopedics were initially drawn to the field because of its nature, as well as their personal attributes, according to a poster presented at the American Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting, reports Healio.
Here are three key notes:
1. Researchers sent a survey to 556 women in orthopedics, and propose creating early education opportunities to help close the gender gap, according to the report.
2. Mentorship or exposure to musculoskeletal medicine during or prior to medical school were reportedly cited by relatively few.
3. Researchers also found "perceived inability to have a good work/life balance, perception that too much physical strength is required, and lack of strong mentorship in medical school or earlier were the most commonly cited potential dissuaders."
