Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. James R. Andrews of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine

James R. Andrews, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and founding member of Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala., and now practices at Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla. Dr. Andrews also is the co-founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute. He presently serves as the president and chairman of the Board of the Andrews Research and Education Foundation.

Dr. Andrews is the chairman of the board and medical director of the American Sports Medicine Institute. He is a past-president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and led the STOP Sports Injuries campaign.

 

Dr. Andrews lectures internationally and is the author of several scientific articles and books. His recent book, Any Given Monday, gives advice on sports-related injuries and ways to prevent such injuries for athletes, parents and coaches.

 

He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Baton Rouge. After obtaining his medical degree, Dr. Andrews completed his orthopedic residency at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans and went on to complete his sports medicine fellowship at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville.
