A study in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy determined patient selection criteria for outpatient joint arthroplasty.
The researchers, led by Nanne P. Kort of Zuyderland Medical Centre in the Netherlands, conducted a review of patient selection criteria used in current literature and recommended by a survey of physicians.
Here's what they found:
1. Eligible candidates for outpatient joint arthroplasty are those willing to participate in the procedure, those undergoing primary arthroplasty, those with a low ASA classification, those younger than 75 years of age and those who have support at home.
2. Factors that exclude patients from outpatient joint arthroplasty eligibility include high ASA classification, bleeding disorders, severe cardiac or pulmonary comorbidities, high BMI, neurological impairments or chronic opioid consumption, among other conditions.
3. The researchers reported that the survey of physicians revealed selection insights comparable to the literature review, although physicians also recommended excluding patients with urologic medical history or severe mobility disorders.
